The total area of Prairie Village of 6.2 square miles all of it is composes of land.
Bits and pieces of the Santa Fe Trail are located in the city.

In 2000, there were 22,072 people, 9,833 households and families around 6,165 in the city. The city has a population density of 3,547.1 people per square mile.

The racial composition of the city was 96.15% White, 0.78% African American, 0.16% Native American, 1.13% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander and 1.11% from other races.

History
After the successful expansion of the Country Club Plaza in Kansas Missouri, J.C Nichols turned toward development of his native Johnson County just miles from the Plaza. In 1941, Prairie Village construction started. In 1949, Prairie Village was termed the best planned community in America by the National Association of Home Builders; the city was recognized in 1951.
